Print Connector: blank documents

Description

Scanshare is aware of current reports of blank documents printed with the Print Connector, specifically starting from December 13, 2022.

Issue

A regression (bug) is existing in the Microsoft KB5022083 of December 13, 2022. The specific update affects how WPF-based applications are rendering XPS documents.

The Print Connector delivers high quality print jobs in XPS format and due to the above regression the processed XPS print jobs are generated without the required embedded images making them appearing blank.

Resolution

Microsoft released a patch on January 31, 2023 for Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 versions and newer, on February 17, 2023 for earlier Windows and Windows Server versions.

If the update is not yet available / installed, the issue can be solved by installing the Powershell and/or registry edit workaround provided in the article below.

After installing the workaround Scanshare services and Windows Print Spooler services need to be restarted to take effects.

Discover with us this May 2022 release with the latest improvements, besides the known bug fixes.

First of all the Lookup trigger is extending support to the connectors introducing the first available Lookup connector: iManage. Thanks to the extended Lookup now connectors are able to retrieve dynamic data anywhere in the workflow, just starting from iManage.

Awaiting new features are also now finally available, such as the option to choose to save the sent mails to avoid keeping filling the outbox folder. Furthermore new support for password protected PDF's via Watch Folder and the very exciting new feature to extract variables via regular expression directly in the variable notation. Apache Log4j Vulnerability

Description

Scanshare is aware of the recently reported Apache Log4j vulnerability classified as critical and tracked as CVE-2021-442288.

Current products

No current Scanshare products are impacted by the Apache Log4j vulnerability because no product makes use of the Log4j library.

Scanshare highly suggests to keep the software always up-to-date.

Older products

In older versions of Scanshare (< 21.03) an older version of Log4j (v1.2.16) could be found in the Samsung XOA Web client component.

According the Apache security bulletin: Log4j 1.x does not have Lookup so the risk is lower. Applications using Log4j 1.x are only vulnerable to this attack when they use JNDI in their configuration. A separate CVE (CVE-2021-4104) has been filed for this vulnerability. To mitigate: Audit your logging configuration to ensure it has no JMSAppender configured. Log4j 1.x configurations without JMSAppender are not impacted by this vulnerability.

Scanshare Samsung XOA Web client makes no use of the JMSAppender hence neither older products are impacted by the Apache Log4j vulnerability.

Since Scanshare v5.21.03 Samsung XOA Web client is no longer included in the product installer.

Tech note: 5.21.03 uploads manager breaking change

Description

Updating over previous versions require that configurations pointing to a fixed local system path are updated (except connectors according the previous note).

Actions

The update requires two steps:

- Locate the desired resource and copy it to the new Uploads data folder (inside the common application data folder)
- Change the configuration path of the resource by removing the path part and leaving only the filename (e.g. C:\MyScripts\Folders.js becomes Folders.js)

If you have the resource local you can also upload it via the uploads manager directly skipping step #1 to copy the resource file manually.

Tech note: 4.11.20 installer prompting for an existing version during upgrade

Description

Installing 4.11.20 (November release) over an existing 4.11.x version will prompt the message:

A more recent version of Scanshare is already installed on this computer

The issue is due to the wrong version number generated during the installer creation in the build number part 4.11.20. This will result in a lower build number than the previous ones 1020, 0920, 0820, 0720 making Windows Installer generating the message.

Resolution

Uninstall manually the existing version, then run directly the new 4.11.20. Although for Windows Installer the version would be lower the software will be upgraded and all settings and license retained and fully working. With any next new update the software can be upgraded by launching directly the new installer no matter of the version number.

Tech note: 5.09.20 possible high CPU usage of OpenAPI service

Description

The OpenAPI service might result in a high CPU usage without doing any operation. The issue seems to occur more after an update on VM environments when the license might be broken due to a change in the activation key. The continuous check of the activation key generates the high CPU usage.

Resolution

Check the logs for license error, if you find license errors, mainly about a different activation key, please update the license via the UI control panel. After the license is updated the activation key errors will be cleared and the service will return to regular functions.

Tech note: 5.09.20 workflow modules rule lists blank

Description

When using any workflow module which has a list of rules (Barcode Reader, Barcode Writer, Zone OCR, ICR, OMR, MICR, Smart OCR, Image Processing, Report Generator) the list of rules will appear totally blank except for the list header, although rules are inserted, saved and fully functional. However the issue will prevent further configuration of each single rule. Existing saved configurations will not be affected and will not brake due to missing display table.

Resolution

Since the issue might be a show stopper for an advanced configuration a quick patch has been created to fix the issue. The patch is available via automatic updates and marked as KB000039.

The patch is distributed with a self executable installer to run after it has been downloaded. Since the fix involves a JS library a refresh of the browser cache might be required otherwise the browser could still load the old cached library and still produce the issue.

Tech note: 5.09.20 error during installation

Description

An unexpected behavior has been found in the 5.09.20 installers during upgrade over an existing v5 version (any version). The generic error message of the screen below is appearing almost at the end of the installation process, when confirming ok the installer will terminate and the previous version has been uninstalled

Resolution

The error is not producing any side issues or loosing of data and the resolution is simply to run again the installer which will complete correctly without any errors and upgrading all existing data and license even the previous version was uninstalled after it.

The next version installers will have the issue solved.

OCR stopping issue

An issue with the default OCR engine has been detected and causing the stopping of the OCR process and consequently also the crashing of the Processing Service.

The issue can be identified with the stopping of the Process Service at the log line "Finalizing document..." and an entry in the Windows Events Viewer with an exception inside the Windows module ntdll.

The issue is originating starting of Microsoft Update KB4041686 which has been rolled up in several different cumulative updates for each Windows version as per follow:

*UPDATE*: The issue has been definitely solved with a patch also for the cases where it was still present after installing the resolving Microsoft updates. The patch is now available for all brands in all internal builds starting of v4.8.0.11 and it will rolled-up in the next official release v4.9.

*UPDATE 04/07/2018*: Microsoft has finally released the updates solving definitely the issue on all operating systems. The specific KB are mentioned in the list above and they are independent by the usage of the patch released with v4.9. In order to disable the v4.9 patch and roll-back to the default OCR engine behaviour edit the following registry key:
